Around mid-January, there are bonfire festivals, or tondo matsuri, all over Japan. Our local community in Fukuda celebrated tondo matsuri last week. As a foreigner, this was my first time experiencing this festival and it was quite fun! We burned last year's New Years decorations in the fire as well as kakizome, or calligraphy that expresses our hopes for the new year. We then cooked mochi in the ashes of the fire and ended the day with a New Years party at the local community center.
